When does the app take over?

The TUOHK companion app is designed to enhance your board game experience, not replace it. Here's exactly what it does—and what it doesn't.

When does the app take over?

One of the first questions we hear from people discovering The University of Hard Knocks is: "How much of this game is on the app?" It's a fair question. We live in an age where 'board game' sometimes means 'an excuse to stare at a screen.' That's not us.

Let's be crystal clear: TUOHK is a board game first. The app is a companion tool that makes the game faster, smoother, and more fun. Nothing more.

What the app actually does

The companion app does three specific jobs:

  • Delivers spoken questions — Karen and Lee read questions aloud from the 12,000-question database. No printed cards to shuffle or lose. Just natural-sounding questions that keep the game flowing.
  • Eliminates setup time — No card sorting, no category selection struggles. The app asks random questions and counts down the time you have allocated to answer the questions.
  • Generates report cards — There are good and bad Tuee reports that can help or hinder your progress through the university.

That's it. That's the full extent of the app's role.

What the app does NOT do

The app doesn't:

  • Replace the physical board
  • Track movement or game state
  • Make decisions for you
  • Replace conversation and strategy
  • Require constant player interaction

The board, the pieces, the movement, the luck, the banter, the arguments about strategy—that's all still yours. The social experience is where TUOHK lives.

Why we designed it this way

We built the app because one of our core brand principles is clear: Technology should enhance the board game, not replace it.

When Warren Brockwell first conceived TUOHK in the early 1980s, he wanted the questions to be delivered electronically. Smartphones have now made it not only possible to store and deliver thousands of questions but to have them read out automatically. The vision has always been about making the *game* better, not about making the app the game.

A box of printed question cards is clunky.  A question database that can expand indefinitely without reprinting anything? That's smart design.

The real magic

The magic of TUOHK happens around the table. It's the moment someone gets asked about the Vienna Waltz and suddenly your mum is telling a story about dancing in Austria. It's the argument about whether your answer was close enough. It's the unexpected knowledge that makes someone say, "Wait, you knew *that*?"

The app is just the delivery mechanism. The game—the real game—is the learning, the laughter, and the conversation.

So, when does the app take over? Never. It's your game. The app just makes it easier to play.
