When you pick up The University of Hard Knocks and fire up the companion app, you're accessing one of the largest hand-curated question databases ever built for a board game. But those 12,000 questions didn't just appear overnight. Each one was written, tested, refined, and approved according to a rigorous set of principles that define what TUOHK is all about.

So how do you build a question database that educates without feeling like a test? That entertains across six Faculties? That keeps players coming back because every game feels genuinely different? We sat down with our question writing team to find out.

Starting With Purpose

Every question we create serves a single purpose: to teach something worthwhile. That might sound simple, but it's the opposite of pointless recall. We're not interested in obscure trivia that sits in your brain for five seconds and vanishes. We want questions that stick—that make players think, learn something genuine, and remember it long after the score card is forgotten.

That's why we ask tough questions before we approve any question:

  • Does this teach something interesting or valuable?
  • Will players remember this knowledge weeks from now?
  • Does it spark conversation or curiosity?
  • Is it accessible without being trivial?

Writing for the Ear, Not the Page

Here's something unique about TUOHK: our questions are spoken aloud by AI voices Karen and Lee. That changes everything. A question that reads perfectly fine can sound awkward when spoken. Long sentences become confusing. Punctuation disappears.

So every question gets read aloud before approval. If it doesn't sound natural, it gets rewritten. If it's clunky or hard to follow, it goes back to the drawing board. The spoken experience isn't secondary to TUOHK—it's central to how the game works.

Building Variety Into Every Faculty

Across History & Geography, General Knowledge & Facts, Technology & Innovation, Entertainment & The Arts, Science & Maths, and Sports & The Olympics, we mix different thinking styles. Some questions ask for factual recall. Others test conceptual understanding. Some surprise you. Others make you think sideways.

That variety keeps curiosity alive. Players never feel like they're answering the same question twice—because they're genuinely not. With random selection across 12,000 questions, the game stays fresh.

Pass and Honours: The Right Challenge

Our two difficulty levels serve different purposes. Pass questions build confidence. They're straightforward and accessible, but never trivial—they still teach something real. Honours questions dig deeper. They're meant to challenge.

Neither is designed to trip you up. Both are designed to help you learn.

The Bigger Picture

Creating 12,000 questions taught us something important: learning is most memorable when it's enjoyable. Every question represents a conversation waiting to happen. Every game is an opportunity to be curious together.
